Piedino intraprende con la mamma e i nonni un lungo viaggio per raggiungere la "Grande
Valle". Durante il cammino la mamma di Piedino, che lo ha educato e ripetuto più volte le
istruzioni per compiere questo viaggio, muore dopo aver subito uno scontro con un
dinosauro carnivoro. A causa di un terremoto che lo ha separato dai nonni, Piedino, solo e
addolorato, è costretto a riprendere con coraggio il viaggio, durante il quale si uniscono
altri cuccioli rimasti soli: tre dinosauri di specie diverse, fra cui la orgoliosa Triky,
e poi il piccolo pterodattilo Pitrie. I rettili affrontano insieme molte difficoltà e
molti pericoli nel loro viaggio, e talvolta litigano fra loro, perchè alcuni vorrebbero
seguire sentieri più agevoli, ma Piedino, fedele alle istruzioni della mamma, procede
deciso nella direzione stabilita.
