Note : The Amicus anthology films were almost as popular as Hammer's output, and this is the very first, with a star-studded cast that includes Peter Cushing in the title role, as well as Neil McCallum, Alan Freeman, Roy Castle, Christopher Lee, Donald Sutherland, and Michael Gough. It's not terribly original, but it has a couple of nice twists, fun performances, some great production design, and a good, satisfying ending. Freddie Francis is quickly becoming one of my favorite 60s horror directors, he's great with the visuals, and a nice change from the more stodgy and moralistic Terence Fisher.

Five men are in a train carriage from London when they're joined by the mysterious Dr Schreck, who "entertains" the men with his tarot cards, which he calls his "house of horrors", claiming to tell each man his destiny. An architect returns to his old family home in Scotland, which has a new owner who's hired him to make renovations, but a coffin in the basement contains the remains of a count who was rumored to be a vampire, and he gets more than he'd bargained for. A man and his family return from vacation to find a strange vine growing on their house, which responds violently to attempts to cut it. They get help from scientists, but end up trapped in the house by the plants that now cover the entire exterior. A jazz musician from London takes a job in the West Indies, but when he attends a voodoo ceremony where he surreptitiously writes down the sacred music, and later mockingly plays it at a concert, he learns a lesson about respecting other people's beliefs. An art critic has a feud with a painter, who humiliates him, and the critic retaliates by hitting him with his car, causing the painter to lose a hand. The painter commits suicide, but the hand might not be quite so dead. An American doctor returns from abroad with his new wife, but soon all signs point to a vampire being on the loose, and his colleague in town advices drastic measures, but the threat might not be what he thought. Finally, the five travellers arrive at their destination for a dark surprise.

This is a quite nice 4k remaster, a little grainy, maybe, but very sharp and clear, with good contrast and a lot of color saturation, which in some places might be a bit much, but it really makes the sumptious set design pop. Mono track also sounds good, commentary by the director himself is quite interesting.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk anthology” for more films made up of several stories put together, often with some twist, “hevk british” for more from the country that set the whole tone for horror in the 60s, or “hevk 60s” for more from the decade of hyper saturated set design and jazz.
