Synopsis:
The film depicts the life of Ernst Thälmann, the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), focusing on the period between the end of World War I in 1918 and the late 1920s. Beginning on the Western Front, it follows Thälmann's return to Hamburg, his alignment with the revolutionary working class, and his pivotal role in the Hamburg Uprising of 1923. The narrative highlights his political development, his fight against corporate syndicates and rising fascist factions, and his ultimate ascension to the leadership of the German labor movement.
