The Śrīmad Bhāgavatam reveals that our fundamental suffering stems from a single, powerful illusion: we believe we are the material body. In truth, the body and the entire sensory world are a temporary, dream-like projection of divine energy (Māyā), experienced through the mind and senses. Life, as we commonly live it, is this sensory dream—a play of birth, death, pleasure, and pain that feels utterly real but is fleeting. We are not these fragile forms made of matter; we are the eternal, conscious self (ātman), a spark of pure awareness trapped in a mistaken identity.
The scripture’s entire purpose is to awaken us from this dream. It teaches that by redirecting our consciousness from the external sensory illusion inward, through devotion and self-inquiry, we can pierce the veil of the false ego. When this realization dawns, the material drama loses its grip. We recognize ourselves and all beings as immortal spirit, distinct from the temporary body, and perceive the underlying spiritual reality that is our true home and nature.
