Note : The Hammer name was resurrected in 2008, and has produced a few interesting films since then. One of the best, and the first to have a theatrical release, is this little Northern Irish folk horror, starring Timothy Spall, Eva Birthistle, and Aidan Gillen. It's decidedly low budget, but the conceit is clever, the setting and rituals nice and creepy, and the performances strong, with a few nods and references to other films, perhaps most notably Don't Look Now, although the story itself is more along the lines of things like The Wicker Man and perhaps most of all Pet Sematary.
Patrick and Louise, whose daughter Alice died tragically locate to the rural town of Wakewood, where he works as a veterinarian and she's a pharmacist. Local veterinarian Artur, however, seems to be involved in strange nighttime rituals, which it turns out can bring back the dead for three days, with certain very strict conditions: The person can not have been dead for more than a year, and only within the area of the town. The couple decide to go ahead with the ritual to see their daughter again, but complications lead to tragic outcomes for everyone, and a nice twist ending.
This Blu-Ray looks quite good, although the cinematography is early digital and so doesn't look as good as it could have (despite the very pretty rural landscapes in the film), but it's fine, as is the sound. Too bad there are no extras.
